Recently we had the experience of attending the 6th annual Raising The Roof Art Auction at The Special Yoga Centre, a charity organisation founded by Jo Manuel in 2004, that provides therapeutic support to babies, children, young people and adults with special needs, through the practice of yoga.
The collection included donated works from artists & designers such as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Gavin Turk, Tracey Emin, Alexander McQueen, and much much more!
We placed a bid on a Stella McCartney & a Tracey Emming sketch but unfortunately were out bidden.
In total they raised a whopping £102 000 to go towards their cause, which includes one-to-one sessions, parent support groups, and the recently launched ‘Get Ready To Learn’ program, where children can enjoy a group yoga session before class.
‘Raising The Roof’ is thrown annually in May or June, and due to the growing success of the turnout, will start preparing for the next auction as early as this October/November.
I’d say it’s definitely worth a visit next year – if you’re a successful bidder, you have the added bonus of going home knowing that your money spent has gone towards a good cause, if you’re not so lucky, it still makes for a fun night where you can participate in the community spirit and look at some art.
